APA Citations: Books and Parts of Books

THE STANDARD ORDER:

  1. Author's Last Name followed by First Initials
  2. Year of Publication
  3. Title of Publication
  4. Name of Editor
  5. Page Numbers Used
  6. Place of Publication (If more than one city is listed, list only the first)
  7. Name of the Publishing Company

Article in an Edited Book

Article or chapter author. (Date of publication). Article or chapter title. Book editors, Book title (page numbers). Publication city: Publishing Company.

For a book with both an author and an editor, list the editor in parentheses after the title.

The title takes the place of the author. On the References page, alphabetize books with no author or editor by the first word in the title. In text, use a shortened title in place of the author name.

Non-English Article or Book

If you are using the original version of a non-English book, then cite the original version, giving the original title and the English version in brackets.

If a non-English reference work is used as a source, give the title in the original language and, in brackets, the English translation.

Series

For a chapter in a volume in a series, list the series editor first, and then the volume editor to match the order of the title of the works.

If the English translation of a non-English work is used, simply cite the English translation, giving the title without brackets. Identify the translator by placing the translator's name in parentheses, followed by "Trans.", after the editor's name.
